Robotic case packing line for canned food

The TACORE robotic case packing line automates the cannery end of line: it groups cans, jars, cartons or bundles, forms the corrugated case, fills it robotically and seals it ready for palletizing. The cells combine articulated-arm robotics, machine vision and format changeover, so a single line can handle several containers. Every cell is custom-designed for the plant layout and product range.

How the line works

  1. 1

    Container washing and drying

Before packing, a washer-dryer cleans the outside of cans and jars and dries them with air knives, so cases and labels reach the customer in perfect condition.

  2. 2

    Accumulation and grouping

Containers arrive by conveyor and are accumulated and grouped according to the case pattern. Transport systems are set up to avoid scratching lacquers or damaging easy-open lids.

  3. 3

    Wraparound case forming

The corrugated blank is picked from the magazine and formed around the container group, producing a case that fits the product tightly, with good pallet stability and less board usage.

  4. 4

    Robotic case packing

An articulated-arm robot driven by servomotors places containers or bundles with precise, smooth movements. A wide range of gripping tools allows it to handle cans, jars, cartons and multipacks.

  5. 5

    Sealing and inspection

The case is closed and glued or taped automatically. Machine vision and cell controls check the grouping before the case is released to the outfeed.

  6. 6

    Transfer to palletizing

Sealed cases are conveyed to the palletizer, which may be a separate robot or the cell robot itself, since this type of robot can perform combined case packing and palletizing tasks.

Line advantages

  • Format changeover to handle several containers on one line.
  • Flexible robot able to pack, unpack and palletize with different gripping tools.
  • Compact design that fits small spaces and low-ceiling buildings.
  • Low maintenance thanks to servomotor drives.
  • Integration with washing, drying and palletizing for a complete end of line.

Species and formats

Suitable for canned fish, seafood and other foods in round, club, dingley or oval cans, glass jars, cartons, pouches and bundled multipacks. Wraparound cases are formed to fit each grouping, and the line can run a single fixed format or switch automatically between several formats according to the plant product range.

Frequently asked questions

What are the advantages of a wraparound case over a pre-formed case?

+

In a wraparound system the corrugated blank is formed around the container group, so the case fits the product tightly. This improves pallet stability, protects cans and jars better and removes the need to store pre-erected cases.

Can the line handle several container formats?

+

Yes. The line can be supplied for one fixed format or with automatic changeover between several formats. The number of formats is defined in each project according to the plant product range.

Can the same robot pack cases and palletize?

+

Yes. The articulated-arm robot used by TACORE can perform combined tasks: packing and unpacking containers, and palletizing individual packs, rows or full layers, simply by changing the gripping tool for each job.
